Bullet Ant StingSome insects have mild stings while others are very painful. Having been in the ant farming business for many years, I have recieved my fair share of stings. Luckily for me, I usually only deal with the Western Harvester Ant, which has a relatively mild sting.

I would rate it at like a 1.2 on the Schmidt Pain Index. Of course I generally try to avoid getting stung by insects and creatures in general.

Fortunately for the rest of us an entomologist named Justin O. Schmidt doesn't try to avoid getting stung by insects. In fact, he decided to do the opposite of avoiding, and in 1984 he set out to get stung by all sorts of bees, ants, and wasps. Mr. Schmidt used his new found knowledge to poetically describe each sting and systematically rate them on a scale of 0-4 that he published as the "Schmidt Pain Index".

Sweat BeeAnimal: Sweat Bee

Schmidt Index: 1.0

Pain Description: Light, ephemeral, almost fruity. A tiny spark has singed a single hair on your arm.

Group of Fire AntsAnimal: Fire Ant

Schmidt Index: 1.2

Pain Description: Sharp, sudden, mildly alarming. Like walking across a shag carpet & reaching for the light switch.

bullhorn acacia antAnimal: Bullhorn acacia ant

Schmidt Index: 1.8

Pain Description: A rare, piercing, elevated sort of pain. Someone has fired a staple into your cheek.

bald face hornetAnimal: Bald-faced hornet

Schmidt Index: 2.0

Pain Description: Rich, hearty, slightly crunchy. Similar to getting your hand mashed in a revolving door.

3 Yellow JacketsAnimal: Yellowjacket

Schmidt Index: 2.0

Pain Description: Hot and smoky, almost irreverent. Imagine WC Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue.

Honey BeeAnimal: Honey bee and European hornet

Schmidt Index: 2.0

Pain Description: Like a matchhead that flips off and burns on your skin.

Red Harvester AntAnimal: Red harvester ant

Schmidt Index: 3.0

Pain Description: Bold and unrelenting. Somebody is using a drill to excavate your ingrown toenail.

Paper WaspAnimal: Paper wasp

Schmidt Index: 3.0

Pain Description: Caustic & burning. Distinctly bitter aftertaste. Like spilling a beaker of Hydrochloric acid on a paper cut.

Tarantula HawkAnimal: Tarantual Hawk

Schmidt Index: 4.0

Pain Description: Blinding, fierce, shockingly electric. A running hair drier has been dropped into your bubble bath (if you get stung by one you might as well lie down and scream).

Bullet AntAnimal: Bullet ant

Schmidt Index: 4.0+

Pain Description: Pure, intense, brilliant pain. Like walking over flaming charcoal with a 3-inch nail in your heel.
